Is It Just Me, or is AI Taking Over the Course Catalog?

May 1, 2026

Have you taken a look at college program announcements lately? If you feel like your news is being flooded with “Artificial Intelligence” this and “Machine Learning” that, you aren’t imagining things! I’ve been digging through the latest data, and the surge is real, and it’s happening fast.

In just the last six months, we’ve seen a massive 40 percent jump in AI-specific program titles compared to the previous half-year. It seems like every time I blink, another university is launching a new way to study our future robot overlords (or, you know, just really smart software). In fact, AI-related fields now make up nearly a third of all new program announcements. Talk about a growth spurt!

The data is clear: the ivory tower is getting a digital makeover. We aren’t just seeing more programs; we’re seeing them show up in places we never expected.

What the Numbers Tell Us

It’s not just about standard four-year degrees anymore. The data shows that colleges are getting creative with how they package these lessons. About 30 percent of these new announcements are for Graduate Certificates. Meanwhile, about 60 percent of these new offerings are online or hybrid.

Interesting Programs Catching My Eye

I’ve picked out a few of the most intriguing examples from the recent list of announcements. It’s fascinating to see how specific these programs are getting!

What do you think? Is your local college jumping on the AI bandwagon yet? It’s a brave new world out there in higher ed. If you are interested in more data trends, join us for our monthly Demand Trends webinar.
